His name is commonly given in English as Bento de Goes〔"Bento de Goes", in: 〕〔()〕 or Bento de Goës;〔Gallagher (trans.) (1953), p. 499-500.〕 in the past, it has also been Anglicized as Benedict Goës.〔Henry Yule (1866)〕 He is mainly remembered as the first known European to travel overland from India to China, via Afghanistan and the Pamirs.
